EfficientGrids - Power System Engineering Consultancy

Engineering the high-voltage pathways to a net-zero grid.

EfficientGrids is a technical consultancy specialising in high-voltage power system engineering design. We support the economic and efficient transition to a net-zero clean power future through rigorous analysis, practical sequencing strategies, and secure long-term system planning.

Our work combines detailed system studies, practical design judgement, and clear communication for technical and non-technical stakeholders. We focus on evidence-based recommendations that are robust, proportionate, and aligned with real-world delivery constraints.

Services

We deep dive into current and future-projected technical difficulties, regulatory nuances, and incentives. Using advanced modelling tools and strategies, we develop recommendations that improve system security and can expedite customer connection timelines. Our analysis experience spans generation and demand projects across technologies including BESS, solar, onshore and offshore wind, thermal generation, data centres, and major industrial demand.

High-Voltage Power System Design

Utilising our years of industry experience, we offer power systems analysis services such as load flow, fault level, voltage, stability, and power quality studies. We find solutions that are economic and efficient and adhere to relevant codes and standards.

Optimal Grid Infrastructure Planning

We use advanced power system analysis software, datasets and probabilistic future generation and demand backgrounds, to conduct time-based and queue-based studies. We provide recommendations for the specification of grid infrastructure reinforcements and their optimal sequencing to maximise the number of new customer connections without compromising the security of the power system.

Feasibility Studies

We conduct comprehensive feasibility studies to determine the system impact of new connections, providing you with everything you need to make informed investment decisions.

Data Quality, Management and Analysis

Data is knowledge. Without good knowledge, you cannot make good decisions. We offer a range of data services to help ensure your organisation has the level of data quality and data management systems necessary to make accurate decisions.

Typical Support Areas

Depending on your needs, support can include technical reassessment of connection design assumptions, reinforcement trigger logic, policy interpretation, and preparation of clear engineering appendices and recommendations for stakeholder decisions.

Thom is a Chartered Power Systems Engineer with over 15 years of experience in the GB high-voltage electricity industry. He has served National Grid Electricity Transmission as an employee and later as a specialist consultant through EfficientGrids, supporting technically complex transmission connection and reinforcement decisions.

His work has included lead technical design or review input for more than 100 transmission connection assessments, covering projects from 50 MW to 1.8 GW. Experience includes BESS, solar PV, onshore and offshore wind, CCGT/OCGT, large industrial demand, and data centre connections.

Thom regularly applies DIgSILENT PowerFactory for load flow, contingency, fault level, voltage, and stability studies, with outputs used to support compliant, defensible, and practical engineering decisions. He also contributes to policy and process improvement activity related to connection reform and engineering governance.

He holds a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and an MSc in Electrical Power Systems Engineering (with Distinction) from the University of Manchester. During his studies he was an IET Power Academy Scholar. He received his Chartership with the IET in 2015.
